Steam Next Fest Demo Count Exceeds 8,000 as Indie Developers Confront AI Cloning Wave

Steam Next Fest has cataloged 8,011 playable demos on its press preview landing page, highlighting an unprecedented volume of game submissions as developers confront an aggressive wave of rapid game cloning powered by automated coding tools.

The total marks a drastic expansion for Valve’s digital showcase. By comparison, Next Fest hosted just over a thousand demos in June 2022. The dramatic spike in volume coincides with growing unease across the independent development community, where creators warn that emergent AI tools—such as Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5 update—are enabling bad actors to quickly decompile, replicate, and monetize mechanics within hours of public reveal.

The threat of fast follow-ups has already disrupted upcoming releases. Studio Alliance Arts Inc. recently cancelled the public Steam demo for its survival title Drunken Goddess Reflux, opting instead for restricted, agreement-gated playtests after expressing concern that competitors would deploy AI tools to replicate the presentation and mechanics before launch.

Other developers are grappling with clones that have already gone live. Following early gameplay footage posted to social media, incremental title Escape the Walls saw at least seven copycat experiences emerge on Roblox alongside a competing clone announced directly on Steam. Meanwhile, developer NoGlyph submitted a copyright infringement notice to Valve against Little Field Studios’ A Game About Needle In A Haystack, reporting that an examination of the competitor’s game files revealed 13 identical class names and duplicated code functions copied directly from their project.
