Overdrive, an unofficial homebrew application that allowed users with jailbroken PlayStation 5 systems to download pirated games directly to their consoles, has suddenly stopped functioning, with its GitHub repository now displaying a 404 error.
The service’s demise was reported on social media by Oliver Darko. While the precise cause behind the shutdown has not been confirmed, Sony Interactive Entertainment is the likely party responsible. The storefront gained traction by offering downloads of high-profile AAA titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Cyberpunk 2077. When paired with an additional utility called ShadowMountPlus, acquired games could even be pinned directly to the PS5 home screen.
Overdrive’s brief surge in popularity was driven by the release of the Relapse exploit in late September, which extended PS5 jailbreaking compatibility to console firmware up to version 13.60. Sony has actively worked to close the vulnerabilities, deploying firmware update 14.00.00 on September 16 to disable the exploit, followed by firmware 14.10.00 on October 1 to further block system modifications.
Publishers are also navigating the platform’s security landscape, as Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games’ upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6 reportedly requires firmware 14.10.00 to run when it launches in November. While the loss of Overdrive removes a streamlined, controller-friendly interface for pirated software, alternative avenues for discovering PS4 and PS5 game files outside the console ecosystem remain available to users with jailbroken hardware.
