Tracking down Princess Ruto during the “Spiritual Stone of Water” quest in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time requires players to secure the Silver Scale and swim to Lake Hylia to recover a vital message.
The mission begins in the southeastern section of Zora’s Domain, where King Zora reveals that his daughter is missing and that his own search extended as far as Lake Hylia. Speaking with a nearby Zora reveals that an underwater passage links the domain to the lake, but Link cannot reach the submerged opening without upgrading his diving depth. Players can obtain the necessary Silver Scale by speaking to a Zora atop the waterfall northwest of the king’s chamber and successfully gathering five scales in a diving mini-game.
Once Link has the Silver Scale in hand, jumping into the water allows him to dive down into the western underwater tunnel and emerge at Lake Hylia. Near a swimming Zora by the entrance, a blue-glowing item sits deep underwater. Diving down allows players to retrieve a bottle containing a letter from Princess Ruto, which reveals that she is trapped inside Lord Jabu-Jabu’s belly.
Returning to Zora’s Domain and presenting the bottled message to King Zora clears the entrance to Zora’s Fountain. Link can then present an offering at the fountain to enter the dungeon within Lord Jabu-Jabu and rescue the princess.
